The World Council of Churches Eighth Assembly took place in Harare, Zimbabwe in December of 1998. The Assembly, which is held every seven years, took place on the campus of the University of Zimbabwe. More than 5,000 delegates, observers, advisers, stewards, visitors and journalists descended on the campus to compose what one local newspaper described as "a mini-world".
